Barrel Matching

Paint-to-bore match is the cheapest accuracy upgrade in paintball. This lesson teaches how to test and choose the right bore.

What you will learn

  • Understand paint-to-bore fit
  • Choose between overbore and underbore
  • Identify barrel threads and insert systems

Lesson steps

1

Paint-to-bore fit

The ideal bore lets a ball roll slowly through the barrel and stop with a light breath of air behind it — not fall freely, not require force.

2

Overbore and underbore basics

Overbore (bore larger than paint) wastes air and hurts consistency; slight underbore seals better but too tight risks barrel breaks and pressure spikes.

3

Barrel insert systems

Insert kits let one barrel back match multiple bore sizes so you can adapt to whatever paint the field sells that day.

4

Barrel threading

Common threads include Autococker, Spyder, A5/X7, and Planet Eclipse proprietary backs. Thread type is model-specific and must match exactly.

5

Paint quality

Fresh, round, brittle-shelled paint outperforms any barrel upgrade. Store paint indoors, level, and rotate the boxes.

6

Weather effects

Heat softens shells and swells paint; cold makes shells brittle. Re-test bore fit whenever conditions change significantly.

7

Accuracy versus consistency

Barrels do not add accuracy; they add consistency. A matched bore reduces shot-to-shot variance, which is what makes you hit.

8

Safely testing paint fit

Test with the marker degassed and the barrel removed. Drop a ball in the barrel back and blow gently — never test fit with a gassed marker.

Safety warning

Test paint fit only with the barrel removed from a degassed marker, and stop using paint that is already breaking in the breech.

Equipment checklist

  • Barrel insert kit or multiple bores
  • Sample of the day's paint
  • Barrel swab
  • Barrel blocking device
  • Notebook for bore records

Common mistakes

  • Running a heavy overbore to avoid breaks
  • Ignoring weather changes
  • Testing fit on a gassed marker
  • Assuming barrel length equals accuracy
